Is OTV practicing yellow journalism? This question isn’t arose by the public but by the ruling BJD party itself. State’s most well-known news channel has been alleged for broadcasting “paid news” in support of BJP and its candidate in by-poll.
Therefore, on Monday BJD approached the CEO (Chief Electoral Officer) and complained against the notorious action of the channel.
The BJD said that press has its own freedom but that doesn’t give the right to persuade the viewer’s perception or thoughts on any actions. Media duty is to inform the society about the happenings not to influence their viewers. PratapKeshari Deb and Surjya Narayan Patro, the senior BJD leaders said that the channel is airing the news in favor of Ashok Panigrahi , BJP candidate to assure his victory in the by-poll schedule on February 24.
Surjya Narayan Patro, BJD vice president said “The media should play its role. Media which has done something with a commercial mindset, we want those expenses to be attributed to the concerned candidate’s poll expenditure.”
It has also been alleged that the channel is relaying breaking news on the debates, panel discussions, special programs to assist the BJP party in by-poll.
But the OTV channel isn’t ready to accept such allegations of “paid news” and are still claiming to be unbiased and doesn’t believe in yellow journalism. OTV owner and MP Jay Panda stated this as cheap politics of Biju Janata Dal. As well as the BJP isn’t approving the truth of the concept of paid news.
BJP’s Pitambar Acharya said “Should the media houses telecast news after seeking permission from BJD. They are disillusioned. It would have been better on the part of BJD had they learnt the definition of paid news first and then gone to the election commission.”
The ruling party demanded for stern actions and interference of CEO against OTV to persuade public perception and to ensure not to promote any particular party. This is not the first time when someone alleged OTV of showing paid news. Recently Ex-OTV reporter Satyajit Mishra took the help of social media and alleged Odisha Television for showing paid news.
But Now the question is why BJD took so long time to realize that Otv is showing paid news and why it happened after expelling Jay Panda from the primary membership of the party and same goes with Satyajit Mishra!
