“Born in Puri, raised in Darjeeling and hustling in Bengaluru – that kind of journey seems inspirational enough just on paper, but Samir Rishu Mohanty has more than that going for him.”-that’s how thehindu described Odisha born rapper Samir Rishu Mohanty.
This Puri born kid known as ‘BIG DEAL’ in rapping world can give Badshah and Honey Singh or any rapper a hard run for their money. Born to an Indian father and a Japanese mother, he commiserates rightly on the opening track “One Kid”, rapping:
“Growing up in Puri, I felt so confused/ Why do I look like no one else in the school?
I mean I got small eyes, also a flat nose/ Which is why all guys happened to crack jokes/
Even the teachers treated me like a foreigner/While all I ever wanted to be was an Oriya.”
Listen to his latest Rap and we bet you’ll fall in love with this Odia kid.
Born in Puri, career in Bengaluru as a musician after an MCA degree (the completion certificate for which he never picked up) and a job opportunity at Infosys that he didn’t take up! Dude! Believe it or not but this guy’s every rap has a story to tell you. A year ago, Big Deal decided to crowdfund this album, raising Rs 1.6 lakh out of the required Rs 2.5 lakh. The rest came from his savings and a company called Qyuki, which helped him reach his monetary goal to work on the EP and a music video.
Next, Big Deal plans on taking his music to Japan and the USA. In fact, he plans to move to the US for a while to witness hip hop culture firsthand, learn from the greats and hopefully become one of the biggest rappers we have ever seen. “Sometimes blind faith gets us farther than we can ever imagine,” is his philosophical take on his success, one he hopes will take his listeners places too. “Don’t give up on your dreams, I didn’t.”
Save his name or remember him as #Onekid, but this kid is definitely going to storm the world in upcoming days.
