In the month of May, a devotee from Maharashtra was allegedly assaulted by the servitors and his gold pendent was snatched inside the Jagannath temple-Welcome To Puri!
After multiple reports against the servitors in Puri temple, for the first time Supreme Court The passed a slew of directions for proper management of the Jagannath Temple and to prevent exploitation of pilgrims there.
This back to back incidents have shocked the entire world and the Jagannath devotees.
As per the reports of TOI, the top court also sought a report from the district judge on the difficulties faced by visitors to the temple and ordered the state govt t follow the management rules of other religion shrines such as Vaishnodevi & Golden Temple, where thousands of devotees visit every year but no such incident at any of those places.
It’s not only case, in the year 2012 an American Noel Magee Hayden,was allegedly beaten up by temple security personnel and driven out of the chariot because he was trying to climb Nandighosh chariot to have a glimpse of the lord.
Similarly in 2015, an ex-army officer along with his wife was assaulted by a priest when they refused to pay him dakshina. EVen the Puri collector Arvind Agarwal himself had lodged two FIRs in the past against six servitors, who had allegedly abused him and even threatened to kill him during Niladri Bije of the deities in 2016.
After multiple reports, now people are raising questions on the management of the temple and labelling such behavior as ‘Gunda Raj’ inside the premises, which is only harnessing the image of Odisha and Puri in the entire world.
The apex court appointed senior advocate Gopal Subramanium to assist the court in framing guidelines for managing the affairs of Jagannath temple.
